Winter weddings have a special kind of charm. Picture a crisp morning with frost on the grass, mist over the fields and candlelight filling the venue.
There’s something romantic about celebrating in the heart of winter. The warmth of being with family and friends, paired with rich colours and soft lights, creates a setting that feels close and timeless.
Winter weddings have become increasingly popular in recent years, and it’s easy to see why. They bring an unmistakable sense of atmosphere and charm, the kind that can’t quite be replicated in any other season.
The low winter sun gives a soft golden light that flatters every photo. Early evenings bring the chance for twilight shots and sunset backdrops. Winter also brings the bonus of off-peak dates, with more availability, a simpler planning experience and often a lower cost.
Since opening our Barnard Suite in 2019, we’ve had the privilege of hosting many winter weddings, each one unique, intimate and filled with warmth. Drawing on that experience, we’ve gathered some inspiration and ideas to help you plan your perfect winter wedding day.
Why choose a winter wedding?
Choosing a winter wedding in the UK comes with so many hidden charms. The season itself brings a sense of calm and intimacy, and with it, wonderful advantages. Venues and suppliers often have greater availability during these quieter months, allowing you to secure your dream setting without the rush of peak-season demand.
It can also be a more cost-effective time to celebrate, giving you the freedom to indulge in those special finishing touches that make your day uniquely yours.
Beyond the practicalities, there’s something romantic about a winter celebration. The warm lighting reflecting off crystal glassware, a sunset backdrop that bathes the room in golden tones, and guests laughing together under twinkling fairy lights as sparklers glow in the evening air.

When it comes to décor, the season lends itself to opulence and texture. Deep, rich tones paired with contrasting floral arrangements and soft candlelight create a look that’s both luxurious and inviting. Even the simplest touches can transform the space into something truly enchanting.

Your photographs will capture the magic of it all: the low winter sun casting a golden glow across the golf course, a dusting of frost on the trees, and that unmistakable sense of warmth that comes from celebrating together indoors as the evening draws in.

Planning tips for a winter wedding
Timing is everything when it comes to winter weddings. With shorter days, it’s important to make the most of the natural light for your photos.
Your photographer and our dedicated wedding coordinator will work with you to plan the day perfectly, ensuring those golden-hour shots and sunset portraits are captured before the evening festivities begin.
Having hosted so many beautiful winter celebrations, our team knows all the best photo locations around Glen Lodge, from the veranda overlooking the rolling countryside to the intimate indoor spaces lit by soft, romantic lighting.
Keeping guests comfortable is another key consideration. Nobody wants to hide their outfit under a heavy coat, so small touches can go a long way in creating warmth and cosiness.
Think hot chocolate or mulled wine stations, plush blankets, and hot water bottles, all of which work beautifully in our inviting interiors. With heating and ambient lighting, Glen Lodge offers a warm, elegant escape from the chill outside.
A carefully chosen seasonal menu is another way to elevate the winter wedding experience. Hearty dishes, indulgent desserts, and locally sourced ingredients can bring a comforting, festive touch to your day.
Our in-house catering team can work closely with you to craft a menu that reflects your tastes and fits the mood of the season perfectly.
For guests, thoughtful details like travel reminders or tips for staying cosy are always appreciated.
Our easy access and on-site parking make arrival simple, and once inside, our heated spaces ensure everyone stays comfortable from ceremony to last dance.
Styling and décor inspiration
Winter weddings are the epitome of elegance, and the styling possibilities are endless. Candlelit tables, cascading winter florals, soft greenery, and delicate fairy lights draped across the beams can all come together to create a setting that feels both intimate and grand.
The natural beauty of Glen Lodge enhances every detail, from the warm wooden interiors to the panoramic views across the frosty countryside. Even our veranda, a favourite for wedding photos, transforms beautifully in the winter months and can be decorated with winter arrangements for a magical outdoor ceremony or photo moment.
